The safety and security of Jews worldwide has always been one of The Jewish Agency’s top priorities. Long before October 7, The Jewish Agency helped protect Jewish communities worldwide through our Security Assistance Fund, established in 2002. This program, established to safeguard synagogues, community centers, schools, and other vital institutions, plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and continuity of Jewish life, particularly in areas where hostility and antisemitism pose significant threats.

“The surge in antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment since the war began created the need for emergency financial security grants to strengthen security measures for Jewish institutions and activities in numerous countries.

Since its founding, the Security Assistance Fund has provided $26 million to 900 Jewish institutions in 80 countries around the world. In 2023 after October 7, the Security Assistance Fund provided 471 emergency grants totaling more than $1.35 million to communities and institutions in 44 countries.

“South African Jewry saw a steep upsurge in antisemitism after October 7 and the community is grateful for the assistance extended by The Jewish Agency Security Fund, which has gone a long way toward reassuring our members and helping them feel safe,” said a director at the South African Jewish Board of Deputies.
